Among the elite of Canadian pianists, Bruce
Vogt is a unique and dynamic performer. He appears regularly
in concert within Canada, but has also inspired audiences
in England, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Norway,
Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, China, and Japan.
Bruce Vogt's repertoire is extremely diverse, encompassing
music from the sixteenth century to the present and
from the virtuoso piano repertoire to the intimate
art song. He has consistently championed the music
of contemporary composers, having commissioned and
premiered a number of new works by Canadians such as
Murray Adaskin and Alfred Fisher. He is also an enthusiastic
performer on period instruments; one of his recordings,
released in the fall of 2003, features music of Schumann
performed on a restored 1864 Erard. His other recordings
include several volumes of the music of Liszt, which
have established for him an enviable reputation as
a Liszt interpreter.
Over the coming two concert seasons, Bruce will present
a series of three recitals in honour of what would
be Liszt's 200th birthday. These three programmes
are a celebration of Liszt's wide-ranging, powerful,
and ultimately very moving achievement, and are structured
in such a way that together they represent a full
portrait of his artistic personality. However, each
programme is in itself a complete vision of an aspect
of his work. Presenters may choose (and customize,
if desired) one to three of the programmes, which
are entitled The Power of Virtuosity; Spiritual Visions;
and "Exuberance
of Heart to Bitterness of Heart."
In addition to his career as a piano soloist, chamber
musician, and recording artist, Bruce Vogt is also
a Professor at the University of Victoria. He makes
himself available as much as possible for master classes,
workshops, festival adjudications, and lectures.
